Kon.Quest
Kon.Quest returns for a third year! With a huge variety of activities available, we're certain to have something for you!
Unique to Geek.Kon, Kon.Quest is a multifaceted event that offers something for everyone. The event consists of over 30 separate "challenges": activities, puzzles, and games that each take roughly 2-15 minutes to play. We'll teach you everything you need to know, most of the challenges can be played by anywhere from 1 to 5 players, and you can play as many challenges as you like. Whether you're at the Kon alone or with a group, and whether you've got 10 minutes or 10 hours to play, come check us out!
You'll begin by choosing which of the "Four Geekdoms" (anime, sci-fi, tabletop gaming, and video gaming) your character will hail from. You may be an ambitious and feisty Catgirl, an Android from many lightyears away, an Elven Bard from the Krynngotten Realms, or an 8-Bit Hero on an epic quest for glory. Each character type receives a bonus when performing a certain type of challenge.
You then receive a few loot cards to start you off. Loot cards represent equipment that your character has earned. (Every time you successfully complete a challenge, you'll get a few more.) They serve many different purposes: some will help you in future challenges (e.g., by allowing you to make ranged attacks, or by giving you more time to solve a puzzle), some represent in-game currency and can be used to purchase specific gear or to replay some failed challenges, and, most importantly of all, some are magical artifacts of great power...
You see, for thousands of years, a group of mysterious and near-omnipotent beings known only as "Mecha Turbo Space Wizards" have fought each other for control of the universe. With the Kon's theme this year revolving entirely around magic, there are sure to be an assortment of legendary magical artifacts floating about. Each Mecha Turbo Space Wizard is desperate to get his/her/its hands on as many of the artifacts as possible, and as such will pay adventurers like yourself well for their safe retrieval!
Your goal in Kon.Quest is to gather as many unique magical artifact cards as you can. Each card will get you one entry into a prize drawing, and we'll also have additional prizes for the players who find the most artifacts.
The challenges are distributed among six different themed stations:
Fighter's Guild
At the Fighter's Guild, players can embark on a series of combat challenges. Using any weapon and armor cards they've earned from previous challenges, players move around a hex grid fighting foul monsters and other assorted baddies. Skill checks (such as a reaction time test performed with a game controller) are used to determine the result of attacks. Fighters' Guild events can be played alone or in a group, though we recommend playing with two or three others for the most fun.
In last year's Fighter's Guild challenge "The League of Evil Exes", players joined up with the characters of the Scott Pilgrim comics to fight and defeat Ramona Flowers' seven evil exes. Each ex had a unique fighting style, and prioritizing targets was crucial to success.
Water Temple
The Water Temple houses devilish puzzles of all sorts. You're sure to find word puzzles, logic puzzles, and mechanical/physical puzzles among the challenges here. You can work alone or solve with others.
In last year's Water Temple puzzle "The Five Cooridors", players were provided with seven magical rings. They were informed of the seven powers the rings were capable of, but not which power was associated with each ring. Given only a set of eight statements about the rings' powers (e.g., "The ring with the white flower is either the Ring of Delusion or the Ring of Feather Falling."), the players had to deduce the magical nature of each ring.
Osaka High Art and Drama Club
At Osaka High Art and Drama Club you'll find the creativity challenges. Your success in these challenges will depend largely on your creativity and artistic talents, but communication with your allies is often important as well. These challenges vary in their player requirements, but most can be played with a group of two or more.
In last year's Osaka High event called "Sensitive Censors", players took the role of rebellious censors working for a futuristic dystopian government that heavily censors the writings its citizens are allowed to read. Poetry is forbidden in this country, but the players did their best to circumvent this restriction: Each was provided with a random page from an old book and a sharpie and given 10 minutes to work. By concealing most of the page's words, they created subversive "blackout poetry". The more creative, the better!
Cantina
The Cantina's is home to Kon.Quest's gambling challenges. These simple, short, one-player games will test your probabilistic reasoning and/or intuition, as well as your luck.
In last year's Cantina event "Steel or No Steel", players could win big or leave with nothing. The challenge played in much the same way as the game show "Deal or No Deal", with the suitcases replaced by playing cards and the money replaced by loot!
#TriviaChannel
The #TriviaChannel is where you'll find Kon.Quest's trivia challenges! Show us what you know and earn some geek cred (and loot cards!). You can play solo or in teams.
In one #TriviaChannel challenge last year, players were tasked with putting events from geek fiction on the correct locations on a timeline. (For example: "Lightning strikes the hill valley clock tower (Back to the Future)" went to "Nov. 12, 1955, 10:04 PM", "A super robot named Mega Man was created" went to "200X", and "War was beginning (Zero Wing)" went to "AD 2101".)
Kon.Monster Stadium
Kon.Monsters is Kon.Quest's own miniature trading card game! A Kon.Monster is a sort of hybrid of a Pokémon with some other character from geek fiction. Monsters include "TanGLaDOS", "Pikathulhu", and "Missingnobi Wan Kenobi". We're changing up the rules from last year, but the games will still be quick and the rules easy-to-learn, so do your best to catch 'em all!
We hope to see you and your friends at the Quest!
